The most common form of assignment, which a student has to write individually, is essay writing. At every stage of academic career students have to write numerous assignments which requires sharp writing skills as well as ability to research. Essay writing helps students to enhance their writing as well as researching skills. Unfortunately, there are many students who don’t know the skills of writing a high-quality essay due to which they feel fatigued when it comes on writing.
Every essay has almost the same pattern of writing, which includes: Choosing a topic and focus, researching, preparing an outline, drafting, and producing a final version. Below we discuss these steps one my one:
CHOOSING A TOPIC: The first and the most important step in essay writing are choosing a topic. It your teacher didn’t provide a topic, don’t worry, you can easily create a topic of your choice. Make sure the topic you choose must be of your interest, relevant to your studies and you have some knowledge about it. Avoid choosing too broad topic. You can take help from Internet, where you can find numerous topics of your choice. You can also take help from your professor who can guide you in the best manner.
FOCUS: Once you have a topic, next step is to develop a topic sentence. A topic sentence is the starting sentence of your essay, which helps the reader to know more about your topic and also keeps you on track.
RESEARCH: Gather all the relevant material you find for your essay topic. You can find enough material from your class lectures, class discussions, books, libraries and Internet. Avoid gathering irrelevant material.
OUTLINE: Write the list of questions on the piece of paper you think will be used in your essay. Jot down all the relevant material and make the outline of your essay.
THE FIRST DRAFT: This is the rough draft of your essay. It helps you to know the errors you have made while writing, you will be able to get an error-free writing if you have written the first draft. The introductory paragraph contains the background study of your topic sentence. Next step is to write the body and supporting paragraphs, same as you have written the outline of your essay. Check the formatting otherwise; make sure the formatting style is according to your teacher’s requirement.
THE FINAL CUT: One you have written your first or rough draft next step is to check that first in order to avoid errors you have made while writing. Edit material where requires. Write your essay again and read it loudly. Make sure it is free from any spelling, grammatical and punctuation errors.
