world's first Hebridean spinning wheel web site

Hebridean Spinning wheels hit the web
One of the oldest technologies in the
world meets one of the newest today (Wednesday, December 19) with
the launch of a web site dedicated to the Hebridean spinning wheel.
hebrideanspinning.com
FACE="Verdana"> is believed to be the world's first web site
selling genuine hand-built Hebridean spinning wheels.
Angus Glen has teamed up with a local
web development company, caperhouse.com
to promote his spinning wheel business to an international audience.
The web site, at www.hebrideanspinning.com,
enables site visitors to learn a little about the history behind
the famous 18-spoke spinning wheel and place an order online.
Each spinning wheel is hand-built following
the traditional design and methods passed down from generation
to generation.
Indeed, Angus, who lives on the Hebridean
island of Lewis, is following in the footsteps of father, Adrian.
Over 20 years ago, Adrian made Hebridean spinning wheels and sold
them from his gift shop to customers all over the world.
Said Angus: "My father built his
spinning wheels for customers in the States, Canada, New Zealand...and
this was in the days before the internet. With 10 million people
across the globe claiming Scots descent, a web site is the obvious
way to tap into this market. Getting a genuine fully working Hebridean
spinning wheel made in the Outer Hebrides by an island craftsman
is an attractive selling point. And having the web site designed
and built here too means hebrideanspinning.com is truly an island
production."
Taylor Edgar, co-founder of Caperhouse.com
along with Alan Macleod of Scalpay, added: "The hebrideanspinning.com
web site is an opportunity to demonstrate that a distinctive high
value product manufactured here by a local company can use the
web to find markets in the UK and overseas. Even the smallest
firm can benefit from the level playing field presented by the
internet and, with the right web site promotion and marketing,
get a slice of the billions spent online."
