Main Text
Handmade Norfolk Soaps specialise in making soaps inspired by local plants and herbs. Many of which, grow on the Norfolk coast and at neighbouring Pensthorpe, in the Wensum valley. They have concentrated on two flowers in particular for the celebrations, Marshmallow and Evening Primrose. The prize, a “Pamper Hamper” contains a selection of soaps, a jute bag collection of guest bars, geranium rose bath sea salts, a body brush, an exfoliating skin glove, a loofah, and a luxury Rose and sea salt bath bomb.
Marshmallow, Althaea officinalis, sometimes called "seashore mallow", grows all around on the Norfolk coast and marshes. The generic name Althaea is derived from the Greek word altho, "to cure", while the specific name officinalis refers to its long history as a medicinal plant, used since Roman times, and as a confection. The root contains 25 percent mucilage, 11 percent sugar, 38 percent starch and 11 percent pectin. Sadly, modern marsh mallows are not made from the plant, but a flour, sugar gum made artificially pink.

Evening Primrose, has large, fragrant, yellow flowers which are said to open between six and seven o'clock in the evenings, perhaps that accounts for its name. They grow all around the Norfolk coast. The plant is rich in oils and used for many medicinal purposes, including skin care. A spokesperson for the company, owner Jonathan Goulding stated,”The lather is extremely rich and creamy, as they are handmade with additional evening primrose oil. I’m sure the winner will thoroughly enjoy the hamper, but there are plenty of free bars on offer, for the runners up, so good luck!”
