Spring is back and so are the bugs...

Added: (Fri May 13 2005)

Spring is now finally upon us and amongst all the pleasurable and positive aspects that come with everyday life, it also delivers a multitude of bugs and insects. Unfortunately, to enjoy this time of year and keep the little critters at bay, it means covering yourself, your children and your pets in potentially nasty chemicals…

The active ingredient in many conventional insect repellents today is N, N-diethyl-meta-toluamide, better known as DEET. DEET is found in approximately 230 different products produced by 70 companies, although questions regarding its safety remain highly contentious. The EPA maintains that DEET is only "slightly toxic."
However, a recent study by Duke University pharmacologist Dr. Mohamed Abou-Donia belies this classification by detailing an extensive list of neurological harms caused by DEET and other conventional insecticides, from memory loss to tremors to slurred speech. The study also found that DEET caused brain cell death and severe behavioural changes in rats. "The take-home message is to be safe and cautious when using insecticides," says Abou-Donia. "Never use insect repellents on infants, and be wary of using them on children in general. Until we have more data on potential interactions in humans, safe is better than sorry." Abou-Donia also warns against taking any kind of medication when using DEET, as the combination could cause "toxic side effects."

In addition, not only does DEET stain clothing and often cause skin irritation, DEET degrades slowly in the soil, and it is thought to be toxic to fish, birds, and aquatic invertebrates. Permethrin, another chemical often used in insect repellents, is a suspected carcinogen and endocrine disruptor, according to Environmental Defence, and can cause acute allergic reactions in some people.
