Raleigh Company Teaches the “Art” of Landing a Job
To help Triangle residents survive the current job market, Dan Galloway, President of Raleigh-based Think Big Picture, is offering low-cost, one-day seminars on how to effectively handle your job search.
The six-hour long session covers topics ranging from properly preparing for interviews, the etiquette of networking, résumé writing and includes the Myers Briggs personality test. Galloway believes that with proper training, job seekers in the Triangle will stop contributing to the national unemployment trends.
“Most people don’t look for a job everyday, they typically work for a living,” says Galloway, who has more than 16 years of experience in the corporate recruiting and career transition fields for companies such as Sea World, Duke University, the Hilton at Walt Disney World Resort, and Right Management Consultants, an internationally known career management firm. “People don't think they need job search training, but they often leave the workshop wanting more,” says Galloway.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, June’s unemployment rate rose to 6.4%, which translates to 913,000 people who have lost their jobs since March. People attending Galloway’s course, titled, “Career Enrichment/Transition--An Ocean of Possibilities,” are looking for strategies to help them stand above other unemployed but equally qualified job applicants.
Think Big Picture's seminar emphasizes how one’s career possibilities are influenced not only by his or her skill sets but also his or her interests and personality. In fact, Galloway stresses that one’s presentation matters more than a skill set, when it comes to the final hiring decision.
“There is a misconception that it’s about the skills you have,” says Galloway, “but companies don’t hire just your skill set. If they hired you on your skills alone, they wouldn’t have interviews; they’d just look at your résumé and offer you a job without meeting you. Companies hire because of a candidate's background and presentation they make in the interview." Galloway covers a variety of mistakes candidates frequently make during the interview that sabotage what might have been a job offer.
The one-day seminar will be offered July 26th, August 4th, 18th and 23rd. Additional information regarding the “Career Enrichment/Transition” workshop, other classes, and online enrollment is available at www.thinkbigpicture.com through the “Workshops” link.
