Portugal’s English newspaper launches ePaper

The Portugal News (established 1977), the largest English language newspaper in Portugal has launched the publication in ePaper format on its site. This is one of the first newspapers in Europe to adopt this technology from the Indian software specialist Bodhtree. The newspapers original website, launched in 1997 was one of the first newspapers in Portugal to go on the Webb, and is rated by ranking.com as the most popular newspaper website in Portugal, attracting an average of 4700 unique visitors.

The new ePaper format puts every page on the Webb exactly as it appears in print; along with the ability to search, enlarge articles, have them read out and save in the readers own clippings service. Advertisers have added value as readers can click through to the advertiser’s site from any advert with a Webb address, or send an e-mail direct from the advert.

Over five years of searchable editorial is held on the home page, while at least six months back editions will be held in the new ePaper format.

Publisher of The Portugal News, Paul Luckman said, “Our newspaper faces unique challenges as we have so many readers living outside Portugal. The Webb has always given us the opportunity to deliver selected items of editorial to readers on the day of publication, but this new technology gives us the opportunity to deliver the whole newspaper in a very readable format”.

The cover, property section and the classified section are available free of charge, while the main paper costs Euros 5 a month which compares favourably with the print edition which sells at Euros 1.50 each week.
