PARENTS OPT FOR ELECTRONICALLY TAGGING THEIR KIDS

Added: (Thu Jul 05 2007)

Parents want to electronically tag their kids to keep them safe from paedophiles, perverts and dangerous gangs.

A new survey reveals that more than one in 10 (13.2 per cent) parents would make children wear an electronic tag if the technology was available. One parent said they would even consider having their child tattooed.

The poll also reveals that over a third (38.1 per cent) of parents feel the world is a more dangerous place than five years ago, while almost a quarter (22 per cent) feel nowhere in the world is safe anymore.

The on-line survey was carried out by behalf of IdentifyMe Limited, which produces IdentiKids identity bands for children.

Director Nadine Lewis said: The original aim of the survey was to look at the fears parents have for their children becoming lost and separated from them quite innocently. But from the comments we received it is clear that many are now actively worried about youngsters being abducted.

I expected that the idea of electronically tagging a child would be automatically rejected by the vast majority of parents, but was genuinely shocked when over 13 per cent said they would actually do it.

Responses to the survey showed that over half of parents had become separated from their child, although the majority were reunited with them in under 15 minutes, and 42 per cent were found in under five minutes. Shopping trips were by far the most common cause of separations.

The most heartening finding, said Nadine, who is a mum of two, is that of all the responses we received, no-one said they would ignore a child if they thought they were lost.

The overwhelming majority would either reassure and help the child or find an authority figure to help.

Its clear from the results that while people are becoming increasingly concerned about the safety of their children, they would not be prepared to let paranoia about being labelled a potential absconder stand in the way of helping.
