CHILD SAFETY IN THE HOME
A new low-cost product to help parents keep young children safe is being launched in October. Called ‘The Slider’ it enables parents to keep inquisitive youngsters out of potentially dangerous rooms without having to fit expensive or unsightly locks.
Inventor Mike Emery said; “The idea came to my wife and me when our own children were young. As soon as they learned to walk there was an almost constant battle to keep them out of areas such as the kitchen, bathroom, toilet or a lounge with open fire. There was nothing that helped with this other than conventional door locks, which were expensive and came with the added worry of the child locking themselves in. Besides, who wants a home full of locks?
“My wife started running a playgroup and they faced the same problem. We sat down and came up with the Slider – and the prototype was thoroughly tested there. The playgroup found it invaluable in helping to keep the children away from danger and in fact, some of the parents wanted one to use at home…and here we are!”
The Slider is a simple white metal saddle bracket that sits on top of any 35mm internal door and it is designed to slide along the top of the door without causing any damage. A small screw is attached to the door jam – the only fitting needed – and the Slider glides easily along to lock into place on the screw, and unlocks just as easily. The Slider can only be moved by people who can reach the top of the door so it keeps your little ones out of the kitchen while someone is cooking, away from the bathroom, out of your hobby room, utility room…anywhere they will not be safe if they go exploring on their own in the middle of the night!
A very simple gadget to solve a common problem; you’ll wonder why no one has ever thought of it before. It is very discrete and helps you control access without ending up like Fort Knox. Mike said: “The Slider can be moved from both sides of the door too, so it is impossible for anyone to be permanently locked in or out. We haven’t seen any other safety lock that does this.”
The Slider costs just £5 including p&p and it can be bought from www.childsafetyslider.co.uk and it comes with a guarantee of a full refund if you find it doesn’t suit your needs.
Mike goes on to say “Our main market is parents with young children aged between 1 and 8 but we think there are other uses too. The fact that the Slider can be operated from both sides of the door may also appeal to carers of elderly people, who can use it to lock their bedroom door for privacy, but the carer can still unlock it from the outside in an emergency. It does not need any strength to use, just a finger-tip will move the Slider along, so it is a great boon for this age group.
“We’re sure most homes could use this sort of flexible lock that just blends into the décor.”
