At a press conference Jose Ballesta annouced that work will commence in the first quarter of 2008. He explained that the first phase of the build will have the capacitity to cater for 1.5 million passenger per annum. But he did say if it was considered neccessary they could apply to the CAA to double this amount in time for the first flights in 2010.
The airport has a budget of 266 million euros, and the runway will be 3km long and 45meters wide, and in total will cover over 300 hectares of land.It is hoped that some 15,000 flights per annum will use the airport. The project should prove a large boost to the regions economy and create in the region of 20,000 jobs.
