Pressbox (Press Release) - ON THE BRINK
IBERIAN LYNX - SPAIN

The lesser-known corners of the Coto Doana and the rugged regions of the Sierra Morena, are together the last refuge of the critically endangered Iberian Lynx, as well as home to a wealth of other mammals and birdlife. Specialist operator Naturetrek offer a 6-day, two-centre Realm of the Iberian Lynx tour departing London 24th and 29th September 2007.

The most endangered of the worlds 36 cat species, Iberian Lynx (Lynx pardinus), stands on the brink of extinction with just two viable (but isolated) populations within Andalucia, estimated to be fewer than 150 adult individuals. The Iberian peninsula, situated in the rugged, dry and rocky hills and mountains of the relatively unpopulated Sierra Morena is home to the majority (perhaps 70% or more) of Iberian Lynx - the remaining 20-30% live in and around the flat grasslands and pine forests of Coto Doana. Guests spend the first 3-nights in El Roco, an elegant village overlooking the lagoon, river and marshlands that lie within the Coto Doana National Park. Head out before dawn each morning, and again in the afternoon, to maximise the chances for spotting Iberian Lynx. Amongst woodland, open grassland and heathland, Red and Fallow Deer may also be encountered plus some of the regions avian specialities, amongst them Purple Gallinule, Marbled Teal, Crested Coot, the rare Spanish Imperial Eagle (seven pairs breed here) and Red-necked Nightjar. Next up, 2-nights in Sierra Morena, a base from which various scenic viewpoints offer further opportunities to sight Iberian Lynx along with Wolf, Otter, Wild Boar and Mouflon. Here, avian highlights such as Griffon Vulture, rare Black Vulture, Azure-winged Magpie and Hawfinch may also be observed. Tour departures are designed to coincide with Coto Doana at its driest and when Lynx are most likely to be seen close to fresh water, may be found, thus allowing a realistic opportunity to see this rare animal.

The tour cost 795 p/p including scheduled flights, full board hotel accommodation and expert guiding.
