Once considered so stylish it graced the set of a James Bond film, the Ball Chair, is a 60’s design phenomena. Conceived as a “room within a room” this contemporary classic is now available from Bauhaus furniture specialists Livingroom24, for an amazing €1,399 included VAT reduced from €1,699.
So before-its-time it managed to still look credible in the futuristic movie “Men in Black” more than 30 years after its inauguration, this unique and individual piece of contemporary furniture provides a peaceful space to retreat to whether immersed in a favourite read or catching up on the latest bit of gossip. First thought up by revolutionary creator Eero Aarnio, it came to prominence in 1966 after causing a sensation during its unveiling at the international furniture fair in Cologne.
Also known as The Globe Chair, Aarnio used fibreglass to create a shape which at the time was considered ground-breaking. It forms a cosy seat which also had the added benefit of shielding the user from most external noise, a major selling point that allows for a relatively private zone without completely shutting off the outside world.
Available in a white, black, red or orange exterior, the Ball Chair comes in a variety of upholstery colours from a rich, luxuriant burgundy to subtle beige. Whether to a funkadelic, retro-style layout or a modern, up-to-the-minute home environment this chair adds the touch of class that would adorn any room.
Aarnio studied at the Institute of Industrial Arts in Helsinki, and started his own office in 1962. The following year he introduced his Ball Chair, a hollow sphere on a stand, open on one side to allow a person to sit within. The similar Bubble Chair was clear and suspended from above. Other innovative designs included his floating Pastil Chair (similar to a solid inner tube), and Tomato Chair (more stable with a seat between three spheres). His Screw Table, as the name suggests, had the appearance of a flat head screw driven into the ground.
The masters of Bauhaus knew how people should live. Art and design would rationalise space, unclutter the environment, revolutionise the homes of the workers. Everything would fit, correlate and fold away. Light would enter, surfaces would shine and the mind would be free for progress. Architect Marcel Breuer even dreamed of eliminating the impediment of furniture altogether. Henceforth, weary Germans would return home and sit themselves down on columns of rising air.
