Keep your dog safe and warm this winter

While you’re wrapping up in your woolly hat, thick-winter coat and fur-lined boots this winter, spare a thought for your four-legged friend with his bare paws and exposed ears.
While some dogs are built for cold weather, many breeds feel the cold as much as we do! At Just for Pets, your online pet store, we’ve put together some top tips to help keep your canine companion safe and warm this cold, dark season.
Ensure your dog has somewhere warm to rest and sleep – a cold kitchen floor is no place for a cold dog. A dog bed or dog pillow would be perfect, perhaps even a heated dog bed if your pooch is sensitive to the colder weather. Throw in a couple of old blankets to keep him extra cosy!
Try and keep you dog inside as much as possible. When nature calls or when it’s time for ‘walkies’, wrap him up nice and warm in a doggie jumper or coat – these are available in a range of sizes. When you are out for a walk, remember to keep you dog safe with a fluorescent or flashing dog collar to ensure he can be seen – even in the dark winter nights.
Some dogs love being outside in this weather, but make sure they have a nice dog house to provide shelter from the elements and more importantly ensure they have enough water to drink – a heated water bowl will stop the water freezing.
Don’t forget that dogs use more calories keeping warm, so give him a little more food or an extra treat every now and then (keep an eye on your dog’s weight and consult a vet if you have any concerns).
