Kafévend Reduces Carbon Footprint With Waste To Energy Scheme

Added: (Wed Feb 06 2008)

Pressbox (Press Release) - Vending machine supplier Kafévend is becoming almost as well known for its green policies as for its great range of vending solutions. The latest addition to dozens of energy saving practises and recycling schemes now available from Kafévend and its vending machine drinks suppliers is ‘Waste To Energy’, an initiative launched by Mars Drinks UK for Flavia.

Converting used Flavia filterpacks into energy through the use of a dedicated energy plant, the sustainability scheme eliminates the need to send waste product to landfill. With the potential to power more than 10,000 homes for a year, used Flavia packs are collected and transported to a Waste-to-Energy plant ready to be turned into electricity that is fed into the national grid, reducing the need to use and rely on non-renewable fossil fuels.

John Collins, Managing Director of Kafévend has seen a number of go Green initiatives launched under his leadership. “Kafévend supplies more than 6000 vending machines across the country, something which we believe gives us a responsibility to provide schemes and options for the safe and environmental disposal of excess packaging and used materials.”

After enjoying great tasting coffee, the used FLAVIA filterpacks are easily stored in pink sacks. Although the waste to energy process does produce CO2, this greenhouse gas is twenty times less potent than methane released from landfill sites and the electricity only incinerator emit 40% less CO2 than the equivalent coal power station.
