Greener nappies take off!
When eBay stopped allowing the sale of second-hand washable nappies in March, mum of two Sarah Bennett spotted a gap in the market and established The Used Nappy Company.
Providing an online auction service to parents to buy and sell used real nappies, www.usednappies.co.uk has gone from strength to strength since its launch in April, with over 2,500 auctions completing in six months.
Feedback has indicated that this is just the sort of service parents want to see to give their nappies a further lease of life when their babies no longer need them, and over 1,500 registered users can’t be wrong! Sarah says, “demand was certainly out there for an easy to navigate auction site for real nappies that promises to listen to its customers”. The Used Nappy Company has done just that, responding swiftly to customers’ queries and suggestions. One customer says, “I really like the site - much easier to use than eBay!”
Environmental issues are of course key at the moment. Real nappies can be used on subsequent children or can be resold; recycling and reselling real nappies is doubly eco-friendly!
Approximately 8 million disposable nappies are thrown away every day in the UK, with the majority of these ending up in landfill. Washable cloth nappies offer parents an alternative to disposables, at the same time, providing the opportunity to reduce waste and the impact on the environment. Facing the prospect of reduced waste collection or additional charges based on weight, now is the ideal time for parents to try cloth nappies at a lower cost.
