Gas and electricity price rises again as the big freeze starts.
Today has seen the regions major gas and electricity suppliers Powergen raise their prices to reflect higher wholesale energy costs just as freezing temperatures hit the north west. Powergen customers will have to fork out a further 18.4% for electricity customers and 24.4 % for gas customers.
Last week British Gas announced customers will have their bills raised by 22% for both gas and electricity. This means the worst case is if you are still with Powergen and British Gas the average house hold in the north west will see an increase of around £163 a year to their bills. This will add £107 to its average annual gas bill and £56 to its average annual electricity bill.
The UK energy market has seen energy prices rising sharply but all the Energy suppliers putting up their prices are still making healthy profits. Just one week after British gas announced their 22% increase they announced a 22% increase in share divided?
Richard George Director of www.saveonyourbills.co.uk said “Once again we see shortly in to the New Year bring prices rises for the consumer just as we did last year. Consumers should react to these rises by changing their supplier which is very easy to do. It’s the same as you’re insurance for your home or car, if you are paying too much like many of us shop around for a better deal. Do the same for your gas and electricity bills and save yourself up to £200 a year”.
There are currently around 3.8 million electricity and 1.2 million gas customers, in the Northwest. The price rise means the region may have to find on average another £244 million for their electricity bills over the next year and £105 million for their gas bills.
