Finished Shopping? Just one more thing to do...

Added: (Tue Jan 16 2007)

As the yearly shopping fest draws to a close, you might want to consider how you're going to store all the information you'll need if anything goes wrong during the guarantee period.

Ideally, you'll want contact details, make, model and serial number of the product and proof of purchase (sales receipt, bank or credit card statement) as a minimum.

But, the combination of Internet "paper-less" shopping together with warranty periods on many white goods extending beyond 3 years means that putting everything in a filing cabinet isn't the safe option it used to be.

One company, Proof of Purchase Limited, is promoting their website (www.proofofpurchase.co.uk) as a secure off-site "storage" area where each subscriber is given their own username and password to gain access to their private registry.

Once connected, they can complete an on-line form for each product which asks all the relevant questions. There's even an upload function so that you can store scanned in receipts or emails.

"The probability of losing data stored on a PC over a three year period is high. Even keeping till receipts safe in a home filing system for so long is unlikely.

Using our service which is off-site, secure and continually backed up means all the information is on-line and in one place when you need it" said Diana Lines of Proof of Purchase.
