Consumer Action Group Being Sued for Libel

The Consumer Action Group, which has helped thousands through the bank charges reclaiming process, has appealed for help on their website for donations to build a 'fighting fund' to defend a libel action raised against them. The announcement, posted on the website on the 8th October, states that if this action is not sufficiently defended the Consumer Action group would cease to exist. They are appealing for donations to keep the site and community, seen by many as an invaluable resource of support and advice, alive.
The Consumer Action Group Appeal:
We are being sued for libel. We need help to fund our defence.
The Consumer Action Group is being sued for libel. In April 2007 we were obliged to terminate the contract of our admin assistant. This parting was acrimonious. We were obliged to provide explanations on the Consumer Action Group website.
As a result of these explanations and other comments which were made, we have now been informed that the go ahead has been given for the libel action to begin.
We have been in correspondence with the solicitors for over two months but it seems that they are determined to sue. .We believe that everything we have said is true. We will justify ourselves in court and we have no doubt that we will win.
However, our ex-admin assistant is being funded by a very wealthy backer. It seems that money, for them, is no object.
Libel actions are very expensive to defend - even if you win.
The Consumer Action Group has no money and cannot hope to defend this very unfair legal action against it without your help.
We never charge anyone any money. No one gets paid, draws dividends or even runs an expense account.
We can win this legal action but only if we can pay for good representation, otherwise The Consumer Action Group will cease to exist.
The legal action is being brought against the CAG and also against its two founders personally who stand to lose their own money and property if they cannot pay for a good defence.

We will keep you updated as and when we can. However, we should make it clear that any money left over from the fund - either because we win or else because we have a surplus, will be applied for the running of the CAG. .
In the event that we are forced to close, then any donations left over from the associated costs of closure will be applied to a worthwhile children's charity.
