A walk down any supermarket aisle crammed high with chocolate eggs will tell you Easter is fast approaching. Happily for parents concerned by reports in the media about childhood obesity, other gift ideas for this time of year can be just as appealing and at no higher cost.
“My Best Friends” is one such gift, a quirkily illustrated book for children and young teens, which is great fun to compile and can be used to create a unique and personalised record of up to twelve favourite pals. It’s an ideal present for Easter, in readiness for the last term of the school year when your child is looking ahead to changing class, going on to secondary school, or even moving to a new area.
‘My Best Friends’ opens with two ‘About Me’ pages on which you can paste a photograph and write details about yourself. Next it’s the turn of your chosen contributors, who each donate a photo and complete questions about the way they look, their favourite things, and even what they want to be. Some will be funny, some serious: expect to laugh and cringe as you look back in years to come!
The book also includes a useful birthday planner, more pages for photos of some of the memorable times you have shared, and lastly space for that embarrassing class photograph.
Eleven-year-old Lucy Stone from Coventry was one of the first to receive My Best Friends as a gift. ‘My mum bought me ‘My Best Friends’ for my birthday, and now all my friends want one!’
The book was devised by Jenny Hopkins, who says the quality of My Best Friends is what sets it apart from the type of children’s diaries and notebooks often seen in stores. She could not be more delighted with the response it has received during its first few weeks. The intention was to market the book only through a dedicated website, but a top London store has already expressed interest in stocking the book.
Says Jenny, “Obviously it’s very flattering to have the interest of a large retailer, but we’re hoping most people will want to buy direct from us so that we can keep the price at a level school children can afford.” My Best Friends may have been expensive to produce, because of the specially commissioned cartoon illustrations, the fact that it’s colour throughout, and the cushioned hardback cover that makes the book so wonderfully huggable, but we didn’t want to compromise on quality and selling direct is a way of overcoming any potential price problem. ”
Published by Manor House Publications, My Best Friends is available at just Ł6.99 by purchasing direct, either online at www.mybestfriends.net, or by calling 01332 694600. And as a special Easter gift to readers, postage is free on orders received before April 20th 2004.
