Applethwaite Mixes Old with New in its Latest Luxury Residential Development

Added: (Tue Nov 04 2008)

Pressbox (Press Release) - Award-winning regional developer, Applethwaite, has unveiled its latest luxury residential development with the launch of Birthwaite Edge, a traditional Lakeland house on the highly sought-after Birthwaite Road in Windermere, which has been sensitively converted and extended into seven exclusive apartments.

Following on from Applethwaite’s recent success in winning two prestigious national property awards for The Royal, a mixed-use scheme on Lake Road in the centre of Bowness, Birthwaite Edge represents the third investment in Windermere for the developer, which is led by Lake District based Robert Hughes, a builder of luxury homes in the region for many years.

Originally built by renowned housebuilder, G.H.Pattinson in 1919, Birthwaite Edge displays many of the features of a ‘typical’ Pattinson house; local stone walls, slate roofs, and round stone columns and chimneys - all of which have been carefully restored and retained in the new development and are complemented by an extensive new-build extension to the rear.

The result is a unique property, comprising two, two-bedroom, and five, three-bedroom apartments, most of which boast individual patios and terraces overlooking the original house’s superb, immaculately maintained gardens.

Already proving popular with couples and retirees wanting a permanent home, or people from outside the area looking for a rare opportunity to purchase a new second home in Windermere, the exclusive, low-maintenance appeal of the development led to three of the seven available apartments being reserved immediately on release.

Alongside individual garages and parking for each apartment, the development has been finished to a very high standard, with contemporary kitchens featuring Neff appliances, and Phillipe Starck-designed sanitary ware in the bathrooms.

Of the development’s completion, Mike Henry, director of Applethwaite said: “As with all of our redevelopment projects it was important to us in delivering Birthwaite Edge that we retained the very local heritage of the existing building. We are very pleased with the result, which we feel very carefully marries traditional design with the very latest in contemporary living – a view which has been borne out in the response to the scheme from visitors.”

In contrast with the mix of old with new at Birthwaite Edge, Applethwaite’s next residential project, Sunnyhill, which sits on a two-acre plot next door, is a highly contemporary new build. At 5,000sq ft, the ‘Grand Designs’ home, which is on schedule for completion this winter, is set to be the most desirable new residence in Windermere.
