Pressbox (Press Release) -
Never before has renewable energy seemed like such an obvious solution to an economic situation that is being dictated by crippling fuel costs.
As communities across the UK start to feel the impact of inflated prices, thoughts must surely turn to self-sufficiency, climate change and social enterprise. Can the Great British public sustain spiralling prices in the long-term?
More is needed to secure fuel for the future – “It’s time to give the power back to the people and enable communities to find an effective, renewable means of day-to-day living.” says Andrew King, Chair of Energy4All, the UK’s leading expert in community-owned renewable energy schemes.
Westmill Wind Farm Co-op, developed and managed by Energy4All, is a successful case-in-point as one of the UK’s first 100% community owned wind farms…
With 2,394 members, it is the largest community owned and built wind farm in the UK. This £6 million project, situated near Swindon in Oxfordshire, has five spectacular 1.3MW turbines powering the equivalent of 2,500 average homes for the next 25 years; it is the culmination of a fifteen-year dream for the landowner and the community who now own it.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown has hailed a green revolution with a £100bn plan in his recent announcement that the UK should be a leader in renewable energy. Marna McMillin, CEO of Energy4All, comments: “Energy4All welcomes Gordon Brown's commitment to renewable energy and is hoping for more community ownership schemes as a result.”
Under the government's plans an extra 4,000 onshore and 3,000 offshore wind turbines will be needed, they will be part of the £100bn plan to boost renewable energy in the UK. On how this strategy will affect the UK Gordon Brown said: “Increasing our renewable energy sources in these ways, on this scale, will require national purpose and a shared national endeavour. This kind of change will require real leadership from government. They will have to be ready to make hard decisions on planning and tax, rather than going on what opinion polls say.“
Energy4All encourages people from all walks of life to be part of the renewable revolution and join in the fight against climate change, whilst maximising the social, economic, and environmental benefits of schemes to the community. Never has there been a better time to bring community ownership of renewable power to people who want to have a stake in a greener future.
