As A-Level results are released and soon-to-be freshers prepare to fly the nest for university, help is on hand from an unlikely source. Eight entrepreneurial students from Hertfordshire have come to the rescue with a brand new cook book written for students BY students.
Launching this week, ‘SORTED – a recipe for student survival,’ is packed full of healthy, tasty and easy to follow recipes that will have even the most culinary challenged fresher give Gordon Ramsay a run for his money.
“The key for us is to make student living healthy,” says Barry Taylor, creator and photographer for the book. “We were horrified at the tales of woe and how many tins of beans were consumed in the first year of uni by many of our friends”.
“This was how SORTED was born,” continues fellow founder and chef for the book, Ben Ebbrell, currently studying Culinary Arts Management at Birmingham University. “Sat in the pub during a holiday reunion the concept of launching a healthier student living campaign went from an idea on the back of a beer mat to a reality.”
With healthy meals from start to finish, this survival guide offers cheap, classy, simple and most importantly, tasty, suggestions to transform even the most inept student zombie into a domestic master chef. From energising dishes to hangover cures the book caters for all aspects of university life and all budgets. Recipes range from just 25 pence per potion up to the heady heights of £3 per portion, offering a generous helping for all tastes and wallets.
Ben Ebbrell, who concocted all the recipes in the book comments; “As students, we appreciate the challenges of cooking for ourselves at university but also knew that cooking doesn’t have to be such a chore.”
Barry Taylor, responsible for the photography in the book, continues; “We all got together and came up with the concept of creating a healthier eating campaign. We wanted to show people how easy and fun it is to ditch a typical university diet of pot-noodles and take-aways, and create a dish that is healthy and just as cheap.”
The book has already caused a stir, receiving praise from some of Britain’s leading entrepreneurs such as Sir Richard Branson and Duncan Bannatyne. The website www.sortedstudents.com where the book can be purchased, has also achieved high acclaim winning marketing industry magazine New Media Age’s award for Site of the Week.
With videos showing how to make many of the recipes in the book that can be paused and moved on as you are ready, blogs, comments, hints and tips, the cookbook and website are fully interactive.
“We’ve been really surprised by the uptake,” says Barry. “It’s not just students who have bought the book, but young professionals, mothers, and just about anybody.”
The beer mat has made a very welcome return for the lads, now currently being used as their business cards! A smart move when they frequent student unions up and down the country with their roadshow demonstrating how easy it is to cook in a student kitchen, on a budget and to conjure up something that even your mum would be proud of!
“We will be embarking on a road show throughout September and October touring numerous universities around the UK. Aided with a Land Rover and complete with our fully loaded mobile catering unit, we want to encouraging new students to explore healthier menu alternatives and get creative in the kitchen…even if it’s a student kitchen,” says Ben.
The ideal gift for any student, ‘SORTED – a recipe for student survival’ takes the hassle out of cooking, leaving more time to enjoy what are considered to be the best days of your life!
