A Bubbling Norfolk Uprising

Pressbox (Press Release) - Handmade Norfolk Soaps, a British company, specialises in making luxury essential oil soaps inspired by the idyllic countryside and stunning coastline surrounding them. Owner Carol Goulding has created new recipes based on local plants such as “Marsh Mallow”, or the coastal way of life such as “Ship’s Spice Black Pepper soap”, and even local heroes and heroines “Nelson’s Blend” and “Boudicca’s Woad”.

The Boudicca recipe explores the tradition in East Anglia and Norfolk of using woad, with the last working, woad mill closing as late as 1937. Growing naturally in the county, it was traditionally used as a blue dye, until it lost favour to indigo imported from India. Early Norfolk folk, known as the “Iceni”, painted themselves with fierce blue patterns as early as AD60, and rose up with Boudicca their Queen to defend themselves against the Roman invaders.

“Ultimately, the Iceni were not successful with their uprising, but in today’s modern world, we can continue the usage of woad, albeit in a gentler way and definitely without turning the skin blue, as the nourishing qualities of the oil can benefit the skin.”
