New Zealand issues the Challenge of the Te Houtaewa Legend
Te Houtaewa was the fastest runner of his day, and even now he remains a national Maori icon. Come and join the marathon at 90-Mile Beach, Northland, New Zealand and challenge yourself to defeat the mystery which lies along this magical coastline.
On March 3rd 2001, 90-Mile Beach, a location of outstanding natural beauty, will be filled with ambitious souls searching for the truth behind this Maori legend - not to mention their stamina and leg muscles! Participants can choose to enter one of four races, the Ultra Marathon (a relay race), the Marathon, the Half Marathon and the 6 km Walk For Life. Whichever race you decide to enter, be sure to remember that the ground upon which you will tread was once covered by the legendary Te Houtaewa himself!
The Maori legend in question involves the young Te Houtaewa, the fastest runner in Aotearoa (Land of the Long White Cloud) and his quest to steal Kumara (sweet potatoes) for his mother from their enemy - the Te Rarawa people at Ahipara. The Te Rarawa people spotted the young man committing his crime and he was forced to flee immediately, taking the route home along 90-Mile Beach. Te Houtaewa’s speed was such that he outwitted his enemies and ran free from their capture. On his return, Te Houtaewa was greeted by his mother, who was waiting by the hangi pit, (earth oven), ready to cook the long-awaited delicacy. She never found out exactly what her extraordinary son had been doing that day!
All athletes who finish the Te Houtaewa Challenge will be considered winners, but instead of a feast of stolen Kumara, competitors can look forward to a massage, finisher’s shirt and race certificate.
