WORLD’S LEADING PATENT COMPANY TARGETS MANCHESTER FOR NEW OFFICE

Added: (Fri Jun 22 2001)

The world’s leading patent and scientific information provider hopes to open a new office in Manchester over the next few months.

The international company, Derwent Information, a member of the Thomson Corporation, wants to set up a new operation in the city. Fifty science and engineering graduates would be needed for the site which would be Derwent’s first office in the North of England.

The world patent business is growing rapidly and Derwent, which already has offices in cities such as London and Tokyo, is expanding to cope with the demand for more information. The new positions in Manchester, where analysts will deal with information on the latest innovations, should help to retain more graduates in the city. About 60% of University of Manchester and UMIST graduates currently find their first job outside Manchester.

The company headquartered in central London, which is looking for chemistry and electronic and electrical engineering graduates, believes Manchester would be an ideal location as it is home to the University of Manchester and UMIST.

Tony Massey, Production, Planning and Control Manager of Derwent Information says: “The company is growing strongly and we need to find a base that would fulfil our recruitment needs. Manchester has a rich source of science and technology graduates and we want to tap directly into this talent without asking them to relocate to London.”

As patent analysts, the graduates will be summarising and classifying information on the latest innovations produced by businesses and individuals around the world.
Graduates will be able to find out more about the company at the University of Manchester recruitment fair, stand no 76 the Conference and Exhibition Centre, Firs Athletic Ground between 10am and 4pm on 21 June 2001.
