Added: (Tue Aug 21 2001)

Pressbox (Press Release) - PLATO Learning (UK) Ltd is a leading provider of computer-based and e-learning instruction to thousands of users from all over the UK. PLATO Learning has chosen Firstnet Services Ltd to provide them with a resilient and secure load balanced hosting solution for web based learning software with a backend database for recording learners’ progress.

With its already established presence in the USA, PLATO Learning has now introduced the technology to the UK’s educational establishments, with offerings of basic to advanced level courseware in reading, writing, maths, science, social studies, and life and job skills. The PLATOâ Learning System and PLATOâ Web Learning Network provide more than 3,500 hours of objective-based, problem-solving courseware and include tutorials, assessments and management tools to facilitate the learning process.

Firstnet has provided PLATO Learning with a complete load balanced solution, using four Compaq web servers running Windows 2000 Advanced Server. Being load balanced ensures that if there are any problems encountered with one of the servers, the others are ready to take over the delivery of web content. Also, users will benefit from the exceptionally fast download time due to the servers constant self-monitoring and load testing, to ensure the fastest and most efficient delivery of content. All course work submitted by the students is stored on the systems and can be accessed at any time by tutors to provide on-line grading and results.

A managed hosting solution reduces the need to invest heavily in upfront capital costs. Firstnet has invested several million pounds in its state-of-the-art Datacentres which guarantee the most secure environment to house mission critical servers with all of the essential benefits including climate control, card access security, 24 hour security guards, uninterrupted power and a high-speed connection to the Internet.

Colin Young, Managing Director of PLATO Learning (UK) Ltd states: “Our Mission is to ensure the success of all learners throughout their lifetimes. The provision and delivery of high quality resources is paramount to our Mission. Firstnet are committed to this and have performed beyond our expectations. They were intent on presenting a complete solution in accordance with our stringent requirements. They have succeeded, with a high quality service and support infrastructure. PLATO Learning is delighted to be associated with Firstnet.”

Firstnet is already very well established within the educational sector and are pleased that together with PLATO Learning we can aim to enhance the learning process and help secondary and adult learners reach their fullest potential”.
