Diskeeper Corporation Leaks New Storage Performance Technology
Added: (Thu Oct 27 2005)
At the Digital Life show in New York, Diskeeper® Corporation, the leader in automatic disk defragmentation, provided a sneak peek into their new storage performance technology, dubbed Disk Performance Calibration. Disk Performance Calibration is a new class of disk technology that will allow file systems to squeeze more performance out of storage devices and is expected to deliver performance gains of 10-80%.
Within a given disk, array or partition different regions have varying performance characteristics. Older technologies have theorized that these regions existed and attempted to take advantage of them by placing files on the "outside" of disks where data is more densely packed. Unfortunately file systems operate on a logical level ignorant of how proprietary disk controllers place files at the physical level. Additionally the concept of a storage device having an "outside" is greatly oversimplified due to architectures such as RAID, SANs and the use of logical partitions
The first successful implementation of Disk Performance Calibration, also known as “Intelligent File Access Acceleration Sequencing Technology” (I-FAAST™), has just come out of Diskeeper Corporation's new technology laboratory. I-FAAST™ has specially-engineered benchmarks which it runs on your disk volumes to learn their performance characteristics. It is then able to transparently monitor volumes for file access frequency on an ongoing basis to determine which files are requested most often. Special analysis techniques prevent it from being "fooled" by files that have been recently accessed.
This newly-developed technology, sequences the files to take best advantage of both the logical characteristics and physical characteristics of the volume.
I-FAAST intelligence allows it to adapt to changing situations - so if the demands on a given system change, it can automatically adjusts its behaviour accordingly. Diskeeper Corporation is not yet ready to announce if I-FAAST will be a new product offering or if it will fit into their existing product line.
The technology of Disk Performance Calibration is discussed in great detail in a new Diskeeper Corporation whitepaper:
