Conxion 'Core' Digital Delivery Network Beats Akamai 'Edge' Speed by More
Than 10 Percent
Santa Clara, & London - November 14, 2001 - Conxion Corporation, the
reliability and performance leader in managed hosting, has announced that
analysis of performance measurement data from Keynote Systems (Nasdaq:KEYN),
The Internet Performance Authority®, confirms Conxion's® Digital Delivery
Network (DDN) is at least 10 percent faster than Akamai's network. The
measurements that were analysed were taken for a two-week period beginning
October 10th '01.
"Our analysis of Keynote data showed that our delivery model is
fundamentally faster than Akamai's," said Randy Catoe, senior vice president
of Internetworking services at Conxion. "We've invested heavily in our
network design and delivery technology to provide superior service to our
customers, and we believe that the independent third-party data from Keynote
validates and justifies that investment. And given that we can achieve
these results right now with just six servers, four in the US and two in
Europe, as we develop this solution with a wider footprint in the future, we
expect to leapfrog these results."
Core vs edge:
Content delivery/distribution networks were originally developed
to accelerate the delivery of Web content, transactions and applications.
Akamai's solution for overcoming Internet
congestion is to place thousands of servers at the 'edge' of networks around
the world, thereby moving content as close
to the end user as possible and reducing delivery times.
Conxion's approach focuses on origin, also referred to as 'core,' servers
using Conxion's Tier 1 network, with massive bandwidth, peering and its own
network-centric routing software. Conxion's HotRouteT Digital Delivery
Network (DDN) makes intelligent decisions about the routes that data should
travel to the end user, which means that requests for content take the most
optimum path from the origin server to reach the user faster than if the
content were cached at thousands of edge devices.
The Test:
Conxion used Keynote Global 35 measurements to measure a
56K file that was hosted both at Conxion and Akamai using
Keynote PerspectiveT Global 35 measurements from the 25
largest U.S. cities, plus 10 international locations (four in Asia,
five in Europe and one in Canada). Keynote's measurement computers accessed
files on both the Akamai and Conxion networks thousands of times daily.
Conxion's analysis of this
data showed that Conxion's Digital Delivery Network consistently
outperformed Akamai's by nearly 11 percent, with Conxion's average download
at 0.58 seconds vs Akamai's at 0.65 seconds over 23,000 samples.
Conxion's cost advantage:
Conxion's origin server model eliminates the cost and management overhead of
maintaining thousands of servers at the edge of the network, so customers
can simply host their content on Conxion's network using standard hardware,
and at far less expense.
"Conxion's Tier 1 network and peering capability allow for high availability
and reliability," said Larry Buchsbaum, a research
analyst at the Yankee Group. "The HotRoute technology provides intelligent
routing that allows for faster data transfer."
Conxion has hundreds of enterprise business customers, including Oracle and
Microsoft, using this technology every day to the benefit of thousands of
their own customers, proving the scalability of the solution.
