Business Process Automation Technology provides Cimac International with an Invisible Workforce

Added: (Tue Oct 05 2004)

As one of the worlds leading developers and providers of manufacturing solutions, Cimac International are under constant pressure to excel in the field of project management. Their clients expect effective project management as an inability to react to events quickly can often mean additional overheads being incurred. However, with client installations becoming increasingly complex, Cimac International were finding it harder to pre-empt every problem especially when they arose from outside the traditional project management system. To resolve this issue, they employed an invisible workforce.

To succeed in the manufacturing solutions industry, companies must deliver on time and within the increasingly stringent ISO standards framework. Historically, Cimac International had not struggled to achieve this, indeed, company growth is testament enough to this. Yet, the increasing demand for their services was beginning to take its toll on the project management team and Mark Matthems, Financial Director for Cimac International, saw this as a future problem that the company should tackle now, "With the reputation we have within the industry, its important that we are seen to be setting the benchmarks for solution design and deployment. As a result, our employees and clients often want an instant picture of their project and to achieve this you need multiple information systems that can communicate with each other whilst proactively informing decision-makers of exceptions."

In more detailed terms, Cimac International needed real-time information on their key cost centres. Having access to this information is seen as a fundamental backbone to project management, yet this critical information can often reside in financial applications not the project management system. This is both inaccessible and hidden from key remote workers. Mark explained, "Because our critical information resides in our Accounting system, we have to produce numerous reports and hold meetings with key-decision makers with regards to the status of a given project. However, this traditional approach to 'resolution' is costly in administration and lost employee hours." He added, "Orbis TaskCentre resolved this problem by monitoring our information systems and sending key data, via SMS, e-mail, fax and print to workers in the field. This means that our employees can now concentrate on their skilled profession rather than bureaucratic administration."

The success of Cimac International’s invisible workforce also drew comment from Philip Smith, Managing Director for Orbis Software, "It is very pleasing to note that Cimac International are not just seeing the obvious cost reduction capabilities of TaskCentre but the importance of real-time information. In their industry, it’s critical that they pre-empt problems rather than trying to find new procedures to reduce reaction times."

Orbis TaskCentre has changed the way project management professionals view their information requirements, with many companies now focusing on leveraging the power of their existing applications rather than procuring the next version of a given project management solution. The power of automated business process technology is creating an on-demand environment in which the profession in general can drive performance and standards. Industrial analysts see the arrival of on demand technology as a significant issue that will change the way the project management arena operates.
