Aculab completes worldwide rollout of Whirlwind

Aculab has taken the middleware market by storm with the worldwide rollout of Whirlwind, its high performance computer telephony server that provides an alternative to Dialogic/Intel’s CT Media and Brooktrout’s RealComm platform.

Based on the Enterprise Computer Telephony Forum (ECTF) industry standard application programming interface S.100, Whirlwind supports open architecture, allowing developers, integrators and application service providers to create flexible reusable communications applications for enterprise and public network environments.

According to Chris Gravett, sales and marketing director at Aculab, Whirlwind has been launched to give developers greater choice and ensures that everyone can harness the competitive advantage of interoperability.

“In the past, there have only been one or two CT Servers on the market, so naturally they have been offered at a premium price – either through licence fees or as a total package cost,” he says. “Technical capabilities have also had an impact on the final price. For example, the more resources the CT Server has required, the greater the memory capacity and subsequent cost of the chassis.

“With Whirlwind, there will be no licence charge. By delivering a truly open approach to all development communities, we will build on the ECTF’s objective of providing well-defined interfaces that encourage interoperability, thus broadening the computer telephony market.”

Whirlwind offers multi platform and mixed platform ability, allowing developers to use CPU and operating system choices most appropriate to the particular system element.

It adheres strictly to ECTF standards such as S.100, S.200, S.300, M.100 and H.100, offering a choice of operating environments including Windows, Linux and Solaris. The latter is particularly useful for developers who need to consider cross-platform alternatives – such as a Unix server running front-end Windows applications.

“We believe Whirlwind will transcend every level of the value chain – from developer, to reseller, to application service provider, to end user,” said Alan Pound, Aculab’s managing director. “Our aim is to position Whirlwind as the CT Server of choice.”

Notes to Editors
Through a customer-focused approach to development, Aculab has produced a computer telephony (CT) product portfolio that satisfies the speech resource and global digital connectivity requirements of developers and system integrators. CT applications utilising Aculab’s components can handle real-time telephony, through an extensive range of resources and signalling systems.

The evolution of Aculab’s generic API, to provide a consistent programming interface, reduces the integration time of a combination of technologies including Text-To-Speech (TTS), Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR), conferencing and fax. Collectively through supporting a broad range of industry standards and operating systems, Aculab can provide the products needed when quality and performance cannot be compromised.

Aculab’s head office is located in Milton Keynes, UK with offices in North America, Germany and Australia. Website: www.aculab.com
