London Waste leads the way on waste integration
Added: (Tue Jun 21 2005)
In a keynote speech delivered at the Chartered Institute of Waste Management conference on 16 June 2005, Councillor Brian Haley, Chairman of London Waste, issued a challenge to interest groups such as Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth to work together with waste management companies on the way forward in delivering effective solutions for waste disposal in the UK.
To a packed conference, attended by a record number of delegates, he pressed for waste disposal to be pushed higher up the political agenda.
“Politicians have to be informed about the waste industry and not led by politically-correct responses from organisations that have adopted the moral high ground which benefits no one, least of all the politicians. There is a lot more to be done, but the waste industry is working on methods of regenerating waste that make a real and tangible difference to everyone’s lives.”
In his presentation “The green road from disposal to integration”, Cllr Brian Haley compelled his audience to recognise the progress made in
the management of waste.
“Waste used to be all about disposal, now it is more about reusing and recycling.” He said.
Ten years ago LondonWaste was known as the Edmonton Incinerator where domestic waste was simply disposed of. Now the same site operates as an EcoPark. 43 acres of land next to the North Circular road in London, contains recycling and processing facilities capable of handling bulky as well as domestic recyclates – metals, fridges, paper and wood. As part of a continuous development programme a specially commissioned composting facility is due to receive its first green waste in the next couple of weeks and of course waste is still used to generate power. All operations are tightly regulated by the Environment Agency.
LondonWaste is all about finding new and sustainable ways of putting waste back to work; protecting valuable resources; returning them into the economy.
The conference ended on a high note with a final word from Brian Haley:
“We have come a long way in the last ten years but so much more may be achieved through collaboration and consultation with anyone with genuine concerns about the environment and the quality of life.”
