Shanti Indian Cuisine restaurant
Braintree’s restaurant of Royal Indian nobility
If you fancy dining out and enjoying a meal fit for royalty in all respects, you need go no further than Braintree’s Coggeshall Road.
Located just two minutes walk from Braintree town centre and with ample nearby parking, the Shanti Indian Cuisine restaurant experience draws on hundreds of years of Indian tradition across its menu range, décor and hospitality.
The restaurant is managed by Syed Noor and the menu is under the expert skills of Syed’s brother and Head Chef, Mr S. Rahman, whose family members were official chefs to the Indian Palace. Mr Rahman has been guest chef at Dhaka’s internationally renowned five-star Sheraton Hotel and he is also a columnist for the distinguished Bangladesh newspaper magazine ‘Ajker Dak’ where he regularly presents his trademark of mouth-watering dishes.
Mr Rahman has over 25 years experience in Indian cuisine and has collected a number of accolades over his illustrious career, including “Best Indian Chef in London.” Born in Bangladesh, he has deep-rooted culinary inspirations from the sub-continent and British-occupied Bangladesh. His brother and restaurant manager Syed has worked in the Indian restaurant business throughout London and Kent for 15 years prior to taking over the Shanti Indian Cuisine in Braintree. He holds MBA qualifications.
The staff provides an unrivalled and welcoming friendly hospitality and the grandiose surroundings remain unpretentiousness yet true to the regal associations of the restaurant. Opulence is a theme that pervades the building courtesy of interior designer Ou Baholyodhin, who drew on the colours of the polychrome eighteenth century ceramics used by the Nawab Indian royal family. The red, black, green, turquoise and yellow can be seen throughout the rich furnishings and décor of the restaurant and it is these five colours of ‘Shanti’ that are the inspiration behind the name of the restaurant. It is no coincidence then that the food is as beautiful and delicate as the immaculate porcelain from which the name comes.
Head Chef, Mr S. Rahman ensures that Shanti’s cuisine matches exactly to his standards of taste and presentation by using freshly prepared produce and ingredients that he has personally checked. One example of this is his version of Pad Indain, which stays true to its South East Asian origins and is prepared indigenously using tamarind rather than European substitutes such as tomato or chilli sauce. Mr Rahman prides himself on having delicate recipes that he insists are followed to the letter and upheld at all times.
The restaurant is spread into three rooms in an old Braintree town house and has a relaxed and cosy feel that comes with a total capacity of sixty coves, serving a range of authentic Indian cocktails that are made using methods and ingredients faithful to Indian convention. The bar is an elegant hideaway that makes the perfect setting for all occasions from romantic dates to after work drinks. It serves from a separate menu with a range of smaller choices, so also acts as a stand alone venue.
Shanti is available for corporate hire and party bookings, as well as reservations. Rates are available on request. A Sunday Buffet is available at £4.95 and a lunchtime menu is also available, offering set meals from the main menu at special prices.
