Billings Police Officers Sandy Leonard and Terry Bechtold assisted citizen in need of help; officer

On August 10, 2008, Billings Police Officer’s Sandy Leonard and Terry Bechtold were assisting with a downed citizen in the 2400 blk of Montana Ave, near the Blues Festival. The female victim was unresponsive and was being treated by the Billings Fire Department when Ofc. Bechtold observed a reckless driver enter the area. Ofc. Bechtold attempted to warn the driver to slow down, but the vehicle continued to speed towards the medical technicians at a high rate of speed, stopping within 5 feet of the group attending to the female. The male driver quickly exited the vehicle and was met by Ofc. Leonard. The male shoved Ofc. Leonard backwards then continued to make his way towards the medical personal. Ofc. Leonard re-engaged with the male and a struggle ensued. During the struggle between Ofc. Leonard and the male driver, Ofc. Leonard suffered an internal injury to her left knee and was transported to a local hospital. The preliminary investigation is indicating that the male driver was attempting to pick up the female victim, his daughter.

No arrests have been made at this time, the investigation is continuing.
