An enterprising Huddersfield company is on course for significant world-wide sales with its puncture proof tyre system following completion of a Business Link export training programme.
Tyreseal International was set up by local businessman Mohammed Shafi in June 2003 after being involved in the tyre industry for eight years. The firm manufactures an adhesive liquid compound, originally developed by the military to create bullet proof tyres. The product, which contains rubber particles, is injected into the tyre and seals punctures as soon as they occur. Two garages offer the service in Huddersfield and one in Tyne and Wear. Their success has led to the firm expanding their operation by appointing master licensees and distributors in the UK and abroad.
Sales coordinator Lisa Armstrong explained: “We were keen to develop overseas markets and our Business Link adviser suggested their Passport to Export programme. Appointing master licensees and distributors abroad was complicated and we were very keen that only reputable organisations offer the service. The help and advice on loyalty bonuses, contracts, finance and shipping has been invaluable.
“Being on the programme with other local firms who were developing business overseas was great because we could share our different experiences. The manual we got has also proved extremely useful as a definitive reference point for explaining things like jargon and customs procedures. When I get into problems I just call Business Link for help, it’s a great service.
“Our product is now available in South Africa, Pakistan, Bangladesh, New Zealand, Denmark and Australia. We have recently signed up a distributor in Kuwait who will look after the Middle East and are finalising agreements with others to cover North and West Africa. There is also significant interest in Brunei, India, Germany, Kazakhstan, Venezuela, Sweden, Norway, Finland, France and Hungary.
“Passport to Export has given us the confidence to go into some very difficult markets and the success to date has been superb. Business Link also helped us produce a training video which will mean that once our people have had their training in the UK they will have a visual reference manual.”
Tyreseal employs five people and in its second year of trading will turnover £100k.
The company has recently launched a ‘seal it yourself’ bottle form of their tubed tyre sealant to be used for example on bicycles, hand carts, buggy prams or disability scooters. The product is now in cycle shops, online stores, supermarkets, petrol stations, corner shops and catalogues.
