Tips for Choosing a Business Name

Added: (Mon Jul 14 2008)

Naming your business is an important and fun process. A name that stands out will ensure that people remember who you are and what you do. That's good for business. People often use their names as well as a word that describes their business and this is good. But the downside may be that if you sell out and the business then goes bust or is involved in anything shady, you name will still be associated with it.

There are a few rules for choosing a business name and one of these is that it should not be the same as any other, nor should it be so similar that confusion can result. And if it's offensive, forget it. It should not be associated with any government authority or royalty. But how do you find out if any other business has chosen that same name? Easy: just go to the ASIC website and check out the names under the National Names Index.

If you are desperate for a great name and your mind is blank, why not bring in a marketing consultant who can also design logos and letterheads for you at the same time? Money spent this way will ensure that your business name is both memorable so it sticks in people's minds, and flexible enough to still be suitable should you decide to expand.
