TRADE UNION AIMS TO RECRUIT NON-UNIONISED WORKERS

Added: (Fri Feb 22 2008)

UNION MEMBERSHIP IS AN INSURANCE POLICY!

Presently, out of nearly 30 million UK employed, only about 8 million (28%) are members of a Trade Union. Membership of Trade Unions has declined steadily since the 1970s when around 58 per cent of workers were members.

Solidarity is playing its part in reversing this trend. Solidarity General Secretary, Pat Harrington, said "Whilst our Union has been winning members from other Trade Unions we believe we should also reach out to those workers who have left the union fold or simply never joined. That is why we have produced hundreds of thousands of the leaflet 'Why should I join your Union?'. This highlights the benefits of union membership such as advice and assistance with employer disputes, individual rights and representation. In short we describe membership as akin to an insurance policy - there when you need it. It is a simple messsage 'selling' the core benefits of Union membership".
