Pressbox (Press Release) - How print specialists CDS employed environment-friendly production techniques to produce a thrilling annual report for nature organisation JNCC.

Being able to “touch” the feathers of a barn owl and the fur of a rare red squirrel are just two examples of the ways print techniques have been used to create the exciting features of JNCC’s (Joint Nature Conservation Committee’s) Annual Report.

Hot on the heels of last year’s award winner, the report has mixed paper stocks and techniques to create an eye-catching product which has delighted JNCC and its audience.

Using flockage litho stock creates the “furry” feel of the report’s cover. The close up of a barn owl’s plumage on the front and a red squirrel’s hide on the back reflects two of JNCC’s projects and illustrates how it might feel to touch the creatures.

Beautiful full colour double page picture spreads of nature can be found at the beginning of each chapter and each of the images alludes to the theme of the section.

However, this eye-catching report has actually been designed to ensure when it was produced minimal resources were wasted.

“People question how such a report can really be environment-friendly,” said Richard Gregory, Creative Design Manager at CDS, the company that designed, wrote and printed the report.

“However, good print techniques combined with well-thought out design truly illustrates how environment-responsible reports can be produced without being boring,” he added.

Colour pages were designed to fit exactly into four thread sewn 16-page sections which were bound into the cover. By using B2 sized sheets staff could ensure paper wastage was kept to a minimum.

With a need for an environment-friendly paper that would reflect the vibrant colours of the pictures, the four sections were printed on Evolution Satin, 75% recycled, Elemental Chlorine Free paper.

JNCC also wanted to experiment with completely recycled paper and CDS found a way to incorporate this into the report.

By choosing black and white images including one of a killer whale, the 16-page single colour Appendices section could be printed on Cyclus Offset 100% recycled paper, without spoiling the look or feel of the eye-catching report, and then glued in with the four colour sections.

Alex Geairns, JNCC Communications Manager says the careful choice of stock really works.

“I was quite worried the mix of different paper stocks may have been intrusive and deflect from the content, but it passed without comment. Staff were impressed”

“Wanting to use environment-friendly materials doesn’t mean you have to stifle creativity. You can be seen to be doing the right thing, without losing valuable impact,” he added.

The exciting front cover uses stock from sustainable forests and is printed on Flockage White Litho, a stock that is Elemental Chlorine Free which ensures this great design feature complements the rest of the report.

“Most people like the cover, some don’t but this means one major thing – it cannot be ignored,” declared Alex Geairns.

“The front cover is a device that makes JNCC stand out. Our Annual Report is an excellent way to mark our achievements and to signpost to everyone interested in our work the sheer scope of our remit,” he added.

JNCC also employed CDS’ journalism services to ensure the report’s written content was as clear and interesting as the pictures and as memorable as the cover.

“Working closely with JNCC, CDS meticulously planned, wrote and designed this beautiful annual report,” said Richard Gregory.

“It is essential for JNCC to promote their work effectively. The Annual Report does this with techniques which work to minimise damage to the environment and maximises visual impact.”

“People should watch out for next years report which will prove how constantly developing responsible ways of working can still create products with flair,” he concluded.
