Pet Care and Ayurvedic Healing

Added: (Sun Oct 25 2009)

Pets play a large role in the lives of their owners. For many, their pet is a loving member of the family. For others, it can be a loyal companion that keeps them connected to life. Our pets become an integral part of the balance in our lives. As such, maintaining their health is as important as maintaining our own. If a pet becomes ill, it is easy to feel helpless and at the mercy of fate. Ayurvedic healing, however, may be a concept that works as effectively for animals as it does for people.

Ayurveda is a medical system from ancient India that teaches harmony and balance as the key to optimal health. It works to heal and maintain good health by attending to both the physical and mental needs of the patient, based on the premise that the patient is more than just a physical entity. It has worked for people for literally thousands of years. Now many pet owners and veterinarians, as well, are applying the same philosophy to the well-being of their beloved pets.

Our pets are vulnerable to many of the same diseases we are. Diabetes and arthritis are only two examples. Ayurvedic medicine uses herbal medicines, dietary adjustments and stress reducers, such as exercise, to treat these diseases and more in people. In animals, the same basic treatments can be implemented to heal and establish a systemic balance.
Herbal and natural remedies for pets are available for a variety of maladies. One such treatment acts as a calming agent by combining herbal extracts and essential oils, among other things, and administering the mixture as a spray. Herbal supplements can be given to pets as both a healing and health maintenance measure. Parsley, for example, cleanses an animal’s bloodstream of toxins and gets rid of “dog breath” very effectively, the same as it does in humans.

Applying the principles of Ayurvedic healing to the care of your pet can keep balance in your life by keeping balance in his. You and your pet can both live long, stress-free and happy lives by incorporating Ayurveda into your everyday routine.
