New Laws to Protect Old Workers

Added: (Fri Nov 04 2005)

Employment law experts from a Cumbrian solicitors’ practice will be explaining new discrimination laws to the region’s businesses later this month.

City solicitors, Burnetts will be focussing on age discrimination as part of their annual Employment Law Update seminar at Tullie House, Carlisle on 23rd November 2005 from 3.30pm – 6.30pm.

The Employment Equality (Age) Regulations 2006 outlaw age discrimination and come into force on 1st October 2006. The legislation will apply to both public and private sector organisations, regardless of the number of employees. As well as affecting recruitment practices and treatment during employment, the law outlines new procedures for dealing with an employee's retirement.

During the afternoon, delegates will also be updated on how the Statutory Discipline and Grievance Procedures which came into force in October 2004 are affecting employee / employer relations.

Burnetts’ Associate and employment law specialist, Joanne Stronach said, “The new age discrimination regulations will affect all Cumbria’s employers. Advertising for someone to join ‘a young, dynamic team’ could soon be seen as age discrimination as could the offer of medicals for the over 50s. At the other end of the scale, a young employee may feel he has been passed over for promotion based on an assumption that he doesn’t have enough experience due to his age. This seminar is a good opportunity for employers to get an informed overview in order to prepare for the forthcoming legislation. ”

Burnetts’ top employment lawyers will be speaking at the seminar including John Morris, Senior Partner and Kuba Strycharczyk, Partner and an experienced Employment Tribunal advocate. Joanne Stronach and solicitor Tracy Stainton will also be presenting. Up to 75 delegates, from a wide range of businesses, are expected to attend.

The seminar is just £30 plus VAT per person. To make a booking or for further information, contact Joanne Stronach at Burnetts on 01228 552222 or at jdms@burnetts.co.uk
