NEW BUSINESS PROVIDES HOME AWAY FROM HOME
Homeowners with a spare bed can now make some extra cash with the launch of a new online business.
Annabella Forbes has set up Bed&Fed, a website that guarantees guests a ‘home away from home’ as well as allowing people to make money by renting out their spare room.
The 24-year-old came up with the idea while she was a student at Durham University and took a trip to the Lake District. Unable to find suitable accommodation, she joked to her friend that it would be nice if a local family had let them stay with them.
She decided that if families or couples had a spare room it would be an easy and affordable option for people visiting their area, as well as allowing the homeowner to pocket some extra money.
Annabella said: “When I was in the Lake District lots of places were fully booked and we ended up staying in a hostel. It was fine but it would have been nice to have somewhere a bit cosier. That’s when I came up with the idea of people letting out their spare rooms. I think Bed&Fed if the perfect alternative as the guest will not only get a bed and be fed, but will feel part of the family. It is cheaper than a lot of B’n’B’s and is perfect for people who travel for business or are staying in an area for an event.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity to gain an income from your spare room that is often so empty as well as a great way to keep your costs down when travelling. Already we have had families from Perthshire who are offering their spare rooms during July to those going to T in the Park. Festival goers can enjoy the music then go to a nearby house for a comfortable nights sleep and breakfast.”
Homeowners who want to make some additional money subscribe to Bed&Fed for an annual fee. Their details, location and availability are stored on the website making it easy for travellers to access. People who are looking for accommodation pay nothing to search and book on the website. All visitors must bring photographic identification on arrival so that homeowners have no security fears.
As a special introductory offer, Annabella is offering free subscription to the next 200 people who sign up to her site.
Annabella added: “What is great about Bed&Fed is the flexibility. Some people may only have a spare room for a few months during the year, perhaps while their children are at university or maybe only during the summer. Bed&Fed allows them to be available whenever is convenient to them. People who are looking for a place to stay search on the site by location and can then book directly with the homeowner. I don’t make any money from the bookings so it’s a great way for people to earn a bit more.” ENDS.
