Models Direct Comments on Tyra’s Latest Twist

Added: (Fri Nov 13 2009)

Pressbox (Press Release) -

There is ongoing debate concerning the issues of weight and race in the high end fashion industry with campaigns towards a more diverse realistic selection of models, and it seems height could be the next contentious issue.

As a general rule, a female runway model should be 5’ 8” or over, and this can mean huge disappointment for models who are too short but would otherwise be suitable. When applying for the current series of America’s Next Top Model, no girl over the standard minimum fashion model height of 5’ 8” was considered for the fashion reality show.

However, there has been criticism that despite the models being shorter than usual, the shortest contestant is 5’ 3” – still quite tall in terms of petite sizing. At least a wider variety of models are beginning to be considered.

It is also being noticed in other areas of modelling. Successful commercial agency Models Direct, whose models are selected for all types of modelling, has been noticing changes to the industry for a while.

“I think modelling has really opened up over the past decade or so,” says Managing Director Damian O’Connor. “Advertisers are looking for a model who reflects the real world, rather than some high fashion ideal. And at the same time, more and more ordinary people of all ages, shapes and sizes are taking steps towards becoming a model.”

We’ll have to wait and see whether America’s Next Top Models will have a significant impact on the industry, but in the meantime there are already opportunities for shorter models in the commercial modelling sector.

Models Direct takes on models of all sizes and have plenty of opportunities for petite models, working with clients in areas including fashion, television and photography.
