ETHICAL WEDDINGS ASKS ETHICAL BUSINESSES TO SAY 'I DO'

Added: (Sat May 27 2006)

Pressbox (Press Release) - ethicalweddings.com is calling on suppliers to sign up to the UK's first ethical wedding directory, and help give everyone something to celebrate.

The brainchild of Brighton-based Katie and Jamie Fewings, ethicalweddings.com makes planning an ethical wedding easy, and showcases all the interesting, unusual and unique ethical businesses that cater for the wedding market.

ethicalweddings.com soft launches this month, and is offering suppliers the chance to sign up for 3 months free advertising so they can check out what's on offer before committing themselves.

The website has already had interest from couples planning their own wedding. One bride-to-be, Berenice Remy told Katie: I am having a complete nightmare trying to arrange my own ethical and environmental wedding any advice or links your site might hold would be truly appreciated!

ethicalweddings.com is asking ethical suppliers from across the country to sign up and make the directory as comprehensive as possible, covering the whole of the UK, and beyond. Couples often go back to their parents home to get married, and may have lost touch with the local companies that could serve them well. This directory will bring them back together.

Katie and Jamie came up with the idea after being unable to find a similar resource when planning their own wedding. Their ethical wedding was both a result of their interest in fair trade and what it can achieve, and because, with their 2005 April wedding fast approaching, the wedding magazines message was clear: this day is going to cost you... a lot!

Average weddings generally cost around 17,000. Although the couple had no intention of spending anywhere near this figure, it made them think:

If people are prepared to spend so much money on one day, why shouldn't they spend it where it can do some good?

This could mean using fair trade, organic and local products and services, while avoiding conflict diamonds, hothouse flowers saturated with chemicals, and dresses which could be the product of sweatshop labour.

Trawling the Internet for organic and fair trade caterers, dressmakers using
fair trade and organic fabrics, recycled stationery and fair trade wine, Katie and Jamie thought how great it would be to have everything in one place. All the suppliers and service providers listed regionally, according to the service or product, or budget.

And so ethicalweddings.com was born

Additional quotes:

Katie has already started sharing her contacts and advice. One groom-to-be emailed: I have been trawling the internet for months looking for a fair trade wedding dress for my fiance. She has had so much pressure from family that she has now bought one that is not fair trade.

I enquired from the shop and they will accept it back so long as it is within
a month. Can you help me to find a fair trade wedding dress?

A couple of emails later: "Thank you so much for your help Katie. We will try to get one from Rawganique.com. We are so grateful for your help. I think your website idea is a brilliant one." - one satisfied customer!

Another in search of organic bridesmaid dresses

Thanks so very much for all your great suggestions. We are going with a couple of different dresses from the Hempest in the same color. You helped me out in a big way and I really appreciate it. (Kelly Tillman)
