VNU Exhibitions Europe has announced that David Lammy MP, Minister for Culture in the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), will attend its forthcoming MUREX & LiS events (26 - 27 April 2006, The Pavilion, NEC, Birmingham) to host a lunchtime keynote on museums and libraries in the 21st century.

The presentation takes place at 1.15pm on the first day of the events (Wednesday 26th April 2006.) As Minister for Culture, Davids responsibilities include the Arts, Heritage, Museums and Galleries, Libraries, Architecture and Royal Estates. DCMS aims to improve the quality of life for all through cultural and sporting activities, to support the pursuit of excellence and to champion the tourism, creative and leisure industries.

Since May last year, I have travelled the length and breadth of the country visiting a large number of libraries and museums and I have been astounded at the huge commitment of their staff towards the people they serve comments David. Libraries and museums have always been people organisations of course. But in 2006 I want them to be more public facing than ever; with staff getting out of stockrooms and reserve collection stores to spend more time front of house. Murex and LiS offer opportunities to make that happen as well as keeping libraries and museums provision at the cutting edge; and services delivered in the most efficient and effective way possible.

MUREX is the UKs no. 1 showcase for technology, products and services for the museums and heritage industry. The event features an exhibition of the leading suppliers for all museum, attraction, gallery and archive needs. Davids keynote forms part of a free seminar programme running across both events, and covering key issues facing the libraries and museums industries. Running alongside MUREX, LiS is the UKs national library event and features an exhibition of around 120 leading suppliers. Visitor badges allow a free cross over between both events.

We are delighted to welcome David to the events comments Nigel Clear, Event Director for LiS and MUREX. Davids presence highlights the importance of hosting an annual forum allowing the industry to unite, view the latest products and discuss the key issues being faced on a daily basis. Visitors can attend Davids presentation free of charge and listen to his thoughts and plans on taking libraries and museums forward, ensuring they continue to maintain their appeal and cultural importance.
