Community spirit lives on
in SE20
Belinda O’Grady from Anerley, London SE20, has won a prestigious award for the SE20 Community Magazine. The award ‘Community Magazine of the Month’ was presented to Belinda after her magazine was judged to have made a valuable contribution to her local community.
The award was presented by Sue Botterill, founder of MyMag (www.mymaguk.com) that has been responsible for more than 700 community magazines that have been set up all over the UK.
SE20 Community Magazine, which is distributed to over 2000 homes and businesses in Anerley and Penge, London SE20, was recognised by the award after it met the criteria for content, design and layout.
Belinda commented, ‘’I am delighted to win this award. Over the last 9 months, I have worked hard and talked to the local community to develop a magazine that reflects their needs.
I believe that people want to support their local community wherever they can, but it is not always easy to find tradesmen. SE20 Community Magazine is a hybrid of the parish newsletter and the Yellow Pages – taking the best of each to bring local residents a magazine that is truly local and helpful in finding reliable businesses located in the area. Regular editorials and restaurant reviews give it further diversity.’’
On behalf of the Clockhouse Safer Neighbourhood Team, Police Sergeant Glenn Layzell congratulated the Community Magazine on the receiving UK Community Magazine of the month commenting “keep up the valuable task of communicating to the People of Anerley and Penge on local issues and developments. We are happy to support the magazine in its endeavours, and help keep our little part of London a Safer place”
Belinda concludes, ‘‘I think that community spirit is alive and well in SE20. I am proud of the role that my magazine plays in nurturing this sense of neighbourliness. Most people I speak to would rather use local businesses than go to an impersonal large business – most just need a gentle nudge to find one that suits them and if a home delivery service operates.’’
