COMEX 2009 hits new record

Muscat, June 11, 2009. Oman's largest IT, Telecom & Technology Show - COMEX 2009 which was held recently once again proved to have hit new records with more investment opportunities generated among participants. The 19th successive edition reinforced COMEX as a vital platform in transforming Oman’s IT & Telecom industry.
COMEX 2009 has been represented by over 225 companies from countries such as UAE, Egypt, Singapore, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, UK, India, Syria, Malaysia and many others. It also witnessed a very strong & active participation of government with more than 20 entities.
"COMEX this year had a huge turnout in terms of exhibitors, an increase of staggering 20 percent compared to the previous year. This is another milestone for COMEX, which drew in more than 10,000 footfalls on an average daily basis and making a total of over 50,000 headcount for 5 days of the exhibition (audited as per UFI standards)" said, Atif Khan, Sr. Manager - Trade Fairs of Oman International Trade and Exhibitions (OITE).
COMEX this year put the spotlight on various e-government services which evoked good response during the exhibition. Information Technology Authority – ITA enlightened the visitors on various online services from 19 government entities and enabled them to learn how such e-services help transform businesses with greater efficiency. "ITA's role in spreading knowledge and information on e-initiatives has greatly helped COMEX reach another level of success".
The government bodies which showcased e-services were, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Ministry of Civil Service, Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Higher Education, State Council, Ministry of Sport Affairs, Ministry of Information, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of National Economy, Ministry of Regional Municipalities & Water Resources, Muscat Municipality, Public Authority for Social Insurance, Royal Oman Police, Ministry of Housing, Ministry of Interior, Majlis As’shura, Royal Court Affairs”, said Sadiq Ahmed Khan, Director - Sales and Marketing at OITE.
"The awareness program by Telecommunications Regulatory Authority – TRA which featured daily presentations such as telecom regulations; types of telecom licenses; application guidelines & many other topics were a big highlight” Atif Khan added.
Likewise, the daily IT seminar conducted by Tariq Al Barwani, founder and president of KnowledgeOman.com made COMEX 2009 more than just an expo but truly a platform for greater knowledge and information targeted at the end users of ICT".
Business Area
With an increase of 6% COMEX Business Section continued to provide business solutions & served as a platform for companies to forge business tie-ups; networking with serious buyers & promoting products and services among their target audiences.
New entrants at this year's Business Section were MG – IT, Graphic International, Infoway, Netcare Systems, Oman Fiber Optic, Touchmate Software, Abyss Technology, Pristine Computers, Al Hakeem Computers, Modern Technology, Professional Technology Services, Systech, IMTAC and few others likewise received positive response at this year's COMEX.
Ross Cormack, CEO of Nawras said "We are delighted to have participated at COMEX. The event is getting bigger and bigger year after year". At COMEX, Nawras signed a number of contracts including an agreement with the company's newest premium dealer. COMEX also served as a launch pad for Nawras’ latest router, Ericsson w35 which is set to be introduced in the country.
Randall Bernard, Sales Director of Friendi Mobile (new mobile reseller in Oman) said, "We had sold thousands of SIM cards during the event especially during the last two days of the event. The customers who came to our stand were excited about our
offers. COMEX was such a good platform for us to promote our products to such a bigger market".
Shopper Section
With a significant increase of 14% COMEX Shopper Section brought a wide array of computers, laptops, gadgets & consumer electronics offered at very competitive prices compared to last year. Majority of visitors waited for COMEX to buy their desired electronic gadgets at the best rates", said Mr. Atif Khan.
Ajay Ganti, GM of SARCO said, "The first two days of the exhibition has generated a lot of interest in Samsung products. We did very well in the remaining days and exceeded expectations with our high quality Samsung products".
Manmohan Rehsi, GM of MHD – COAT division said, “This year we are extremely pleased to have extended to all discerning phone enthusiasts in Oman the opportunity to reserve the much awaited NOKIA N97 handset during the COMEX event. The pre-booking of N97 at COMEX generated positive response among the visitors”.
"Even the economic downturn engulfing the region, COMEX once again proved to be a success while providing a win-win scenario to all the participants", Atif Khan said.
