A new suite of online sign language courses has been launched offering one-to-one tailored support and the opportunity for students to study at their own pace with assessment via webcam.
With BSLcourses.co.uk being web-based, students can start to learn as soon as an online tutor has been assigned and at a time that best suits them.
BSLcourses.co.uk is the first centre to receive approval from Signature – the national body that promotes excellence in communication with deaf and deaf-blind people – to use webcam technology as a way of recording assessments.
Co-founders Russell Fowler and Rachael Parker, who is currently a Signature regional teacher of the year, founded the centre to provide and specialise in competitively priced online BSL courses and tuition.
Russell Fowler said: “We are also committed to using only award-winning, creative, flexible and highly usable technology.
“We offer a variable approach to learning accredited Signature BSL courses from Level 1 to Level 6, and give students the opportunity to learn at a fast-track pace.
“And we are dedicated to getting more people learning BSL and to ultimately help people integrate with deaf family, friends and colleagues. We are also looking to support learners to become interpreters.”
Rachel added: “Signature loved how we recorded and combined two webcam clips, one of the student and the other of the tutor, into one clip and has since encouraged this method as a key attribute to modernising the way in which BSL is taught and how students are assessed.
“From the comfort of their own home, students can watch classes, be involved in tutorials, communicate directly with their teacher and take assessments – all using an online personalised account and a webcam.
“All the pre- and recorded video clips are high-quality and can be viewed again and again.”
Russell graduated from Staffordshire University with a BSc in computer science but being deaf found it difficult to find a suitable career in the IT industry which lead him to study to become a qualified IT and business auditor.
With these skills of auditing and business processes he joined up with Rachael and founded BSLcourses.co.uk.
Having worked in teaching BSL and deaf awareness for more than 18 years, she is passionate about providing service and support to the deaf community.
She has accumulated an extremely impressive CV of qualifications and experience in not just teaching, or tutoring, but also as an assessor and an internal verifier.
Rachael is the winner of the 2010 Signature Regional Teacher of the Year award, South East of England.
