Are you a Responsible Person?
Added: (Fri Dec 16 2005)
The logical response to this question is “Yes”. Most people would consider themselves to be responsible at home, on the roads, and in the workplace. The responsibilities in these three places are really just common sense…or are they?
From April 2006 there will be new demands placed on those people in the workplace who hold a position of responsibility. These demands come from a piece of legislation called “The Regulator Fire Safety Order”. The new law is set to consolidate all existing fire legislation.
If you instruct, organise, supervise others or simply secure the premises in which you work you will have new obligations under this legislation. Your main priority will be to prevent fire occurring within your office, factory or department, wherever you are deemed to have control.
To make sure you are fulfilling your responsibilities? You need to follow these seven steps:
Number One
Decide which area/s you are responsible for and identify what needs to be done.
Number Two
Allocate or seek budget and resources for your area
Number Three
Decide on a time plan, either using your own time or out sourcing to necessary experts
Number Four
Complete your Fire Risk Assessment – either yourself after attaining the necessary skills or through an outside company.
Number Five
Record all your significant findings from the Fire Risk Assessment.
Number Six
Address your significant findings by developing systems, procedures and best practices, for example induction, training & education.
Number Seven
Make sure your new systems, procedures and best practices are maintained, audited, controlled and reviewed.
