A Significant Cost To Business That Is Good For The Environment…

Pressbox (Press Release) - It’s good news for householders that are keen to recycle their redundant electrical equipment as this year we will see an increase in free recycling facilities. It’s not such good news however for manufacturers and retailers who will be burdened with yet another environmental cost.

The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations which came into force on 2nd January, require electrical goods manufacturers and importers to pay for recycling of products at the end of their life. Retailers will also have a part to play in paying for the collection of broken or redundant equipment. Collection facilities are expected to be set up through local authority recycling centres and civic amenity sites.

Manufacturers and importers will have to sign up to a compliance scheme by the 28th February and submit data by 15th March on the quantities of equipment put onto the market during the past year. Retailers will also be required to sign up to the retailer’s scheme or provide their own collection facility.
