FOOTBALL FEVER BURNS BRIGHT AT PHOENIX
Champions: The Beautiful Game - 11th May 2002 to 14th July 2002
After the success of the Rock Icons photographic exhibition held in December Phoenix Contemporary Art Gallery has added to it’s themed shows by hosting Champions: The Beautiful Game, a photographic exhibition celebrating the great, the good, the bold and the beautiful from the world of football. The exhibition aims to give the viewer the opportunity to be nostalgic about historic moments in the history of football but also a chance to own them.
Champions aims to attract both football fans and collectors of fine photography alike. The exhibition features over eighty classic images from the world of Football with players featured ranging from the homegrown talents of Billy McNeill, Willie Johnston and Archie Gemmill to famous international stars such as Ferenc Puskas, Eusebio and, of course, Pele.
Phoenix Contemporary, situated in the Merchant City district, is one of Glasgow’s trendiest and innovative art spaces exhibiting an eclectic collection of contemporary art. Founded 2 years ago by Daniel Proverbs and Ruth Cherry, their vision was to provide a unique space dedicated to providing a growing market of urban dwellers with an unconventional, and sometimes bizarre, window into the art world. Each project undertaken has been part of an ongoing development and evolutionary process designed to encourage clients into taking a closer look and realising the effect that Art can play in enhancing their lives. In addition to art exhibitions, the gallery space has been used to stage music events, business conferences, product launch parties and private screenings of forthcoming music videos.
Champions opened on the 11th May and will run through to July 14th. Visitors will be able to buy archival numbered and stamped, limited edition, hand-finished gelatin silver photographic prints from the collection along with a wide range of merchandise.
