New event puts Bristol on the Sci-fi map.
BRISTOL 25/07/2009 – Bestselling author Alastair Reynolds, who recently stunned the publishing world when he signed a million-pound novel contract with Gollancz, will be joining throngs of local fans at Bristol's first science fiction convention in September.
Alastair Reynolds is one of Britain’s best-selling science fiction writers. Recently signed to a million-pound contract by Gollancz, he thrills readers with his complex tales of the far future. Reynolds’ Chasm City won the British Science Fiction Association Award for Best Novel in 2001. He has also won a Seiun Award in Japan, and been three times nominated for the Arthur C Clarke Award. He lives in South Wales.
On 26th September he will be Guest of Honour at BristolCon, a one-day science fiction convention being held in conjunction with the British Browncoat Ceilidh, organised by Kumara Conventions at the Mercure Holland House Hotel & Spa in Bristol. There will be discussion panels, trade stands, book signings, live music and a bar. Profits from both events will be donated to the charity Equality Now.
BristolCon is the brainchild of the Bristol Fantasy & SF Society (BFSFS). Programme organiser Joanne Hall says: "This is our first event, and we're delighted to welcome Alastair Reynolds as guest of honour. If this event is a success, we are hoping to grow it to a full weekend convention next year."
She continues: "The science fiction and fantasy scene in Bristol is really exciting at the moment, and it's great that Alastair's presence at this event will really help to put the city on the map."
Other guests confirmed to appear at the convention include Charles Butler, a lecturer at the University of the West of England and one of the UK’s most respected experts on fantastic literature; award-winning local artist Andy Bigwood; and genre writers Cheryl Morgan, Colin Harvey, Gareth L Powell, Jo Hall, Kim Lakin-Smith, Huw Powell, Juliet E McKenna, and Nick Walters.
