We’re not geniuses. We’re consistent.

Pressbox (Press Release) - AUGUSTA, GA - October 1, 2008 - Challenges face the automobile industry as the price of gasoline continues to set record highs and consumers flee pickups and big SUVs for smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles. Along with an already declining economy, there is little good to read into the numbers for Ford Motor Company’s recent auto sales. After losing $8.7 billion during the second quarter of 2008, Ford recently closed its Michigan Truck/SUV plant for 10 weeks and invested $75 million dollars into the factory to prepare for small car production.

On the other hand, Honda has focused on slow-but-steady growth with popular cars like the Civic and Accord. As executive vice president of Automobile Operations of American Honda Motor Co., Inc., John W. Mendel indicated, its plants can already switch back and forth almost instantly from one model to another. For instance, a plant in Ohio that makes Accords also builds the less popular Acura TL luxury sedan. The company has been able to satisfy demand for Civics and Accords due to its flexible factories and they will continue to do that until TL sales rebound. "We can reprogram it to make it build more Civics," Mendel said. "That's by far one of our competitive advantages."

While Honda may look like it is able to forecast the future, the company's top U.S. executive says it is well-positioned for rising gasoline costs because it has emphasized small, fuel-efficient vehicles. "We're not geniuses," says John Mendel, the company's U.S. executive vice president. "We're consistent."
